Malibu, California – One of the world’s most widely known and acclaimed classical guitarists, Christopher Parkening, has been named a distinguished faculty member of Pepperdine University. The announcement was made by Dr. David Baird, dean of Pepperdine’s Seaver College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences.
“This is a tremendously important appointment,” said Baird. “Having Christopher Parkening join our music faculty is an extraordinary compliment for the institution and our program. We are pleased, excited, and truly honored to welcome such an outstanding individual to our community.”
Christopher Parkening is celebrated as one of the world's preeminent virtuosos of the classical guitar. For more than a quarter century, his concerts and recordings have received the highest worldwide acclaim. The Washington Post cited his stature as “the leading guitar virtuoso of our day, combining profound musical insight with complete technical mastery of his instrument." Parkening is recognized as heir to the legacy of the great Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia, who proclaimed that "Christopher Parkening is a great artist—he is one of the most brilliant guitarists in the world."
Parkening’s rare combination of dramatic virtuosity, eloquent musicianship and uniquely beautiful sound has captivated audiences from New York to Tokyo. He has performed at the White House, Carnegie Hall and the great concert halls of the world. Parkening has been a guest soloist with the finest orchestras in the United States and has amassed an extensive discography on Angel/EMI Classics. Highlights of this summer’s concert schedule include John Williams and the Boston Pops on May 31 and June 1, Grant Park, Chicago on August 10, and the Hollywood Bowl on August 27.
Parkening’s commitment to music extends beyond his demanding performance schedule. He also teaches an annual summer master classes at Montana State University. Parkening, who will begin teaching at Pepperdine in the fall of 2002, said his decision to join Pepperdine’s full time faculty was greatly influenced by the university’s commitment to the Christian faith. “Pepperdine’s mission fits in so perfectly with my goal as an artist and an educator who has chosen to use my music to glorify God,” he said.
Christopher Parkening and his wife, Theresa, reside in Southern California. He is also a world class fly-fishing and casting champion who has won the International Gold Cup Tarpon Tournament.
